A custom flag looks simple from a distance: fabric, ink, stitching, and a few metal grommets. Up close, it is the result of a series of decisions that start with a file on your computer and end with a parcel on your doorstep. This guide walks through the custom flag process at Flags Factory, from the first sketch to the moment your order leaves the workshop, so you know exactly what happens at every stage.
Step 1: Preparing Your Artwork
The clearer your starting file, the smoother everything that follows. We accept several common formats:
- Vector files (.AI, .EPS, .PDF, .SVG) — the ideal starting point, because vector shapes scale to any size without losing sharpness.
- High-resolution raster files (.PNG, .TIF, .JPG) — workable when the resolution is high enough for the final flag size.
- Rough sketches, photos, or written descriptions — if you want to design your own flag but do not have a finished file, our team can redraw or rebuild the layout for you.
A few practical notes: thin lines under about a millimeter tend to disappear when viewed from a distance, and very detailed emblems can lose definition at smaller flag sizes. If that matters for your design, mention it when you send the file and we will flag it during review.
Step 2: Artwork Review and Your Digital Proof
Once artwork arrives, our team reviews it for resolution, line weight, symmetry, and how the design will read on fabric rather than on a screen. Text that looks balanced on a monitor sometimes needs to be enlarged or repositioned once it is applied to a flag that will be seen from across a field or a parking lot.
After that review, we send you a digital proof. The proof shows the layout, the color breakdown, and the finishing details — hem style, header type, and hardware. You approve it, request changes, or ask questions. Nothing goes to production until you are satisfied with what you see. This proof stage is the single most important checkpoint in the custom flag process, because changes are free here and expensive later.
Step 3: Selecting Fabric and Construction
Fabric choice depends on where and how the flag will be used. Common options include:
- Knitted polyester — a lightweight, economical choice for short-term events and indoor displays.
- Spun polyester — a heavier weave with a more traditional feel, often chosen for outdoor and ceremonial use.
- Mesh polyester — an open weave that lets wind pass through, useful for large flags in breezy locations.
- Nylon — a lighter fabric with a bright finish that responds well to light breezes.
Construction matters just as much as fabric. A reinforced fly end, a sturdy header, and clean stitching all contribute to how a flag performs over time. We offer grommets, pole sleeves, rope and toggle attachments, fringe, and single- or double-sided builds depending on whether the design needs to read correctly from both sides.
Step 4: Custom Flag Production
Printing method is matched to your design and order size:
- Dye sublimation — the standard approach for full-color, photographic, or gradient artwork. Dyes are transferred into the fabric under heat, so the image becomes part of the material rather than a layer sitting on top of it. This gives a soft hand and helps color withstand outdoor exposure better than surface printing.
- Screen printing — a good fit for larger runs with a limited number of solid colors.
- Digital printing — practical for short runs, one-off prototypes, and designs with many colors.
Before the full run, we check the first printed panel against your approved proof for color and placement.
Step 5: Cutting, Sewing, and Inspection
Printed fabric is cut to size, then sewn by our production team. Hems are stitched, the fly end is reinforced where wind stress is highest, and hardware is attached. Each finished flag is inspected before it is folded — checking stitching, hardware placement, print alignment, and general workmanship.
Step 6: Packing and Shipping
Flags are folded, bagged, and packed into cartons with the hardware protected. For larger orders we pack by size and quantity so that unpacking on site is straightforward. Domestic and international shipping are both available, and you receive tracking information once your order is dispatched. Delivery timing depends on order quantity, finishing options, and your destination.
How Long Does the Custom Flag Process Take?
Every order is different, but as a general guide: proofing usually takes a day or two once artwork is complete, production is scheduled after you approve the proof, and shipping time depends on the destination and service selected. If you are working toward a fixed event date, tell us the deadline early — that lets us spot potential bottlenecks and suggest alternatives before they become a problem.
Ready to Start?
Send us your artwork, your intended flag size, and where the flag will be displayed. If you only have a rough idea, that is fine too — describe it and we will help you turn it into a production-ready file. From there, the process is straightforward: proof, approval, custom flag production, inspection, and delivery.
