Whether you are ordering a single flag for a storefront or a batch for a trade show, knowing what happens between your idea and the box on your doorstep makes the whole project easier to plan. This guide walks through the full custom flag process we follow at flags-factory.cn, stage by stage, so you know what to send us, what to expect back, and where your approval matters most.
Stage 1: Choosing the Right Format and Fabric
Before artwork matters, the flag itself has to fit its job. A few quick questions settle most of it:
- Where will it hang? A wall-mounted banner, a flagpole, a hand-held parade flag, and a feather banner all call for different construction.
- Indoor or outdoor? Outdoor flags generally use polyester or nylon; indoor display flags often use a heavier, more draped fabric for a cleaner look.
- How is it attached? Sleeves, grommets, rope tabs, or pole pockets — this decision affects the finishing step later on.
- Single-sided or double-sided? Double-sided flags are built from two printed panels with an inner liner so the design reads correctly from both faces.
If you are unsure, tell us the display situation and we will suggest a format. Getting this settled early avoids reworking the file later.
Stage 2: Preparing Artwork — How to Design Your Own Flag
This is where most projects either sail through or slow down. If you plan to design your own flag, keep a few practical rules in mind:
- Work in a vector format (AI, EPS, PDF) where possible. Vector artwork scales cleanly to any flag size. High-resolution PNG or JPG files can work too, provided they are sharp at the intended print size.
- Keep text large and simple. Lettering that looks bold on a screen can disappear when viewed from across a street, and small text can be difficult to produce crisply on woven fabric.
- Respect the bleed and seam area. Designs should not push critical elements to the very edge, since the perimeter gets folded and stitched.
- Think about contrast. Fine outlines and low-contrast color pairs tend to blur at a distance.
No design file yet? Send a sketch, a logo, or even a written description with reference images. Our team can prepare artwork for you, and you will always see it before anything goes to print.
Stage 3: Digital Proof and Your Approval
Every order includes a digital proof: a visual of your design on the correct flag proportions, showing layout, colors, and finishing details such as grommet placement or sleeve width. This is the checkpoint where changes are easy and inexpensive. Nothing enters custom flag production until you confirm the proof in writing. Take a moment to check spelling, dates, and the exact shade of any brand colors — proofs are your chance to catch a typo before it becomes permanent.
Stage 4: Printing and Finishing
Once approved, the file moves to production:
Printing
Most designs are produced with dye-sublimation printing, where the ink is transferred into the fabric fibers under heat rather than sitting on the surface. This approach handles photographic detail and gradients well and keeps the fabric soft. Simpler, bold designs can also be produced by screen printing, which suits solid color blocks and larger runs.
Cutting and Sewing
Printed fabric is cut to size, then finished according to your chosen attachment method. Typical finishing includes hemmed edges, a reinforced fly end, and either a sleeve, grommets, or rope tabs. Double-sided flags are assembled from two printed panels with an opaque liner between them.
Quality Check
Finished flags are inspected for print alignment, stitching integrity, and correct hardware before packing. If something does not look right, it is remade before it ships — not after it arrives.
Stage 5: Packing and Shipping
Flags are folded, protected, and packed according to quantity and destination. Small orders ship in protective mailers; larger orders are boxed with hardware packed separately to avoid abrasion during transit. We ship internationally and will quote the available methods and estimated transit times based on your address and order volume. Tracking details are shared once your order leaves the facility.
What to Send Us to Get Started
- Your artwork file, or reference images and a description
- Finished size and quantity
- Attachment preference (sleeve, grommets, rope, pole pocket)
- Single-sided or double-sided
- Required delivery date, if you are working to an event deadline
Send those five items and the custom flag process starts the same day. Most delays in this workflow trace back to artwork that needs redrawing or a proof awaiting approval, so replying quickly at the proof stage is the single best way to keep your order on schedule.
